Most people assume glass is indestructible. After all, it's made from silicon dioxide, one of the most stable compounds on earth. But your windows are under constant attack from the environment, and the damage accumulates invisibly until it's too late to reverse.

Glass doesn't rot. But it does degrade. Maintaining Windows Matters.


Unlike wood or metal, glass doesn't corrode or decompose in the traditional sense. What it does do is slowly break down through a series of chemical and physical processes most of which happen at the microscopic level long before you notice anything with the naked eye.


The result over time is hazing, iridescent discoloration, white mineral staining, permanent pitting, and reduced light transmission. By the time these are visible, some damage may already be irreversible.

Glass degradation is cumulative and self-reinforcing. Each stage makes the next one worse which is why maintaining windows and glass matters so much.


Year 1–2 — Invisible surface changes

Leaching begins immediately. Minerals and pollutants start bonding to the glass. No visible impact yet, but the surface is no longer chemically neutral.


Year 3–5 — Early hazing and spotting

Hard water deposits become visible, especially in direct sunlight. Atmospheric etching begins to dull the surface. Coatings start degrading in high-UV areas.


Year 5–10 — Permanent staining risk

Mineral scale that has gone untreated can now be etched into the glass surface and may require restoration compounds or polishing to address not just cleaning.


10+ years — Structural compromise

Micro-cracks have widened. Seal failures become common. Biological growth has had time to establish and produce sustained acid damage. Replacement may be the only option.



Hard water mineral scale is the most common cause of premature class degradation we see, and almost all if it is preventable with routine cleaning. By the time it's etches in, no amount of washing will reverse it.

Where regular window washing makes all the difference


Window washing isn't just about appearance. It's preventive maintenance — interrupting the degradation cycle before damage compounds. Here's what professional cleaning actually does for your glass:


Contaminants need contact time to cause lasting damage. Acids, minerals, and biological matter sitting on your glass for months are far more destructive than the same contaminants removed in a few weeks. Routine washing dramatically shortens that contact window.


Early mineral deposits are soft and water-soluble. Left for a season, they harden and begin bonding chemically to the surface. Left for years, they etch in permanently. Washing removes them while they're still easy and cheap to address.


Clean glass also makes damage visible. Hairline seal failures, micro-cracks, early etching, and failing coatings are all far easier to spot on a clean surface. Catching these early can save significant repair or replacement costs down the line.


And professional technique matters. Abrasive materials, hard tap water, and dirty squeegees can scratch the surface and accelerate the very degradation they're supposed to prevent. Pure water, proper tools, and trained technique protect the glass rather than stressing it.


How often should windows be cleaned?
