How to Tell If Your Windows Are Low-E (And Why You Should Know)

If your home or office was built or had its windows replaced any time in the last couple of decades, there's a good chance you're looking through Low-E glass right now and don't even know it. Recognizing it can help you feel more in control of your window maintenance and energy efficiency.
Low-E stands for low-emissivity. The glass has an incredibly thin metallic coating that reflects heat and filters UV light, which keeps energy bills down and protects your furniture from fading. You can't see the coating with the naked eye. Most people have no idea it's there. And that's exactly why it's worth knowing how to check.
Here are four ways to find out.
Try the lighter test
This one works best at night or in a darkened room, and all you need is a lighter or a match.
Hold the flame close to the glass and look at the reflections. Because modern windows are made with two or three panes of glass sealed together, you'll see multiple flame images reflected back at you. Look closely at the color of each one. If one of them looks slightly different, a hint of green, blue, or pink compared to the others, that's the Low-E coating showing itself. If every reflection is the same warm orange-yellow, you're probably looking at standard uncoated glass.
It sounds almost too simple, but it works.
Try the white card test
Hold a white business card or a sheet of paper up against the glass and look at how it reflects back.
Standard glass gives you a clean, neutral white reflection. Low-E glass tends to return a faint tint, usually blue, green, or gray, because the coating subtly alters what bounces back. It's not dramatic, but once you know what to look for, it's hard to unsee.
Look at the edge of the window, as it often contains hidden information; inspecting the spacer bar or markings can reveal if the glass is Low-E.
Most people never look at the edge of a window, but there's a lot of information hiding there.
The thin metal strip you can see between the glass panes, called the spacer bar, often has text or markings stamped on it. Open a window or look closely at a sliding door and check the edge of the glass unit. You might find an etching, a sticker, or printed text that says "Low-E," "LoE," "Solarban," "Sungate," or carries an ENERGY STAR logo. Some windows also have a small corner sticker from the manufacturer that was never peeled off after installation, which often lists the glazing specs right on them.
Check the paperwork
For commercial buildings, the fastest answer is usually a phone call to your facilities manager. Window specifications are typically documented, and Low-E glass gets noted because it carries a cost premium over standard glazing.
For homeowners, check your original window installation paperwork, any renovation permits, or contractor invoices. If your home has an ENERGY STAR certification, the glazing type will be listed there, too.

If we see onsite that you have Low-E windows (this will be documented in our CRM and shared with you), we will not use steel wool and will instead apply an additional cleaning with purified water to ensure cleanliness and window safety. We can also use Scotch-Brite White pads for stubborn debris like overspray from construction.
